Excerpt:

Five different card games were in progress in the saloon. Most of them looked to be casual games played as much for fun and bragging rights as for money, but one appeared much more serious. In most games, the players took turns acting as the dealer, but this game was being worked by a professional dealer, who didn’t join in the play. The five men who were playing didn’t talk to each other or flirt with the house ladies gathered around, and they were the best-dressed men in the saloon.

Of course, that was the game Lainie headed for.

The house ladies and other observers around the table made room for them to squeeze in. The current game ended, the players collected their winnings, and the dealer, a tubby man in a crisp blue-striped shirt, gathered up the cards to deal out the next game.

“Do you have room for one more?” Lainie asked.

A tall, broad-shouldered fellow in a fine black suit, with a thin, carefully-trimmed mustache and an unlit cigar clenched between his teeth, looked up from his winnings. His pale gray eyes fixed on Lainie first, then moved to Silas. “We might,” he drawled around the cigar. “Depends on your stakes.”

Lainie tossed a drina coin onto the fancy silver tray that held the bets. “Here.”

The dealer looked at the small silver coin, then at Silas. “You’re joking, Mister. That ain’t stakes. Not for one of these games.”

“You’ll have to talk to her,” Silas said. “I’m not allowed to play for money.”

The man in the black suit gave Lainie a superior little smile. “So you think you’re a gamester, little lady?”

Lainie grinned back at him. “You scared to lose to a girl?”

The other men laughed. “Well, Storts? Are you?” one of them asked. The house ladies tittered and whispered among themselves.

“Not at all,” the black-suited man said, chuckling. “You just have a seat, little lady, and we’ll see who loses.”
